Why You Need Heavy Tackle When Fly Fishing For Pike
Fly fishing for pike is a different proposition from most fly fishing, and demands a considerable adjustment in equipment. A pike has teeth which are capable of damaging light equipment, and many an angler has landed a pike only to have it bite its way clear again in a matter of seconds. It is also necessary to have the correct equipment in order to avoid unnecessary suffering to the fish. Even the size of the fishing net, which is so often overlooked, is crucially important if the fish is not to suffer after it has been caught.
The most obvious piece of equipment which needs to be right is the rod. A light rod which may be ideal for other types of fish will be of no use whatsoever when attempting to catch pike. You need a large rod to be compatible with the type of fly you need to catch pike, because these need to be extremely heavy duty themselves. There is also the issue of the struggle the pike will put up when it is finally hooked. This can last for several minutes even with an extremely strong rod, so if you use a lighter one you will simply be prolonging the agony.
The line also needs to be strong enough to hold, but an intermediate line can work very well. With advances in modern technology, there are now specialist aids for the pike fisherman. Tapers have been designed which are ideal to use with the type of large flies you need for pike fishing. Not everyone uses them, but they are there to assist anyone who feels they need a little help from technology.
The attachment of the fly to the line is also something which needs to be right. Even experienced anglers using heavy duty nylon line have had it completely bitten through by the fish after they had apparently made the catch. The best solution appears to be to use the heavy duty nylon line, but to fortify the line with steel near to the fly. This solution has worked for many experienced anglers who have tried it.
If you have never tried fly fishing for pike before, it will be as well to do as much research as you can before you go out to try. There is much wisdom to be found in the old fishing books, as this is an occupation which has stood the test of time for many decades. The greatest resource you have, though, is the Internet, where the collection of old wisdom is augmented by the experiences of anglers using the latest equipment and technological advances. Making notes and comparing different experiences will help you enormously when your own turn comes to try fly fishing for pike.
